[BozemanLUG] October Meeting

Greetings,

The meeting this month is on Thursday, Oct. 29th and we have a number of things planned.

1) Justin Krohn will be giving a presentation about the various firewall / router distros he has used.  They include pfSense and Untangle.  He will be sending me a more complete topic description which I will share with you closer to the meeting date.

2) Windows 7 Pro - Getting to know the competition.  As you probably know Microsoft is slated to release Windows 7 on Oct. 22nd so it will have been out a week on the meeting day.  The CS department at MSU-Bozeman is a subscriber to the MSDN-AA program and has had the final release for over two months now.  I installed Windows 7 Pro 32-bit on my Asus Aspire One D150 laptop (replacing Windows XP) and will be showing it along with providing some commentary.

3) OLPC Lending Lab project - As you may know, I applied with the OLPC project to become a Lending Lab and got approved for 10 OLPC X0-1 laptops.  They arrived yesterday and I've unboxed one of them so far.  I'd like to discuss with the group exactly what we should do with the laptops.  The tentative plan is to divide them up among the four LUGs in Montana (3 for Bozeman, 3 for Billings, 2 for Helena, and 2 for Missoula) and have a point of contact at each LUG who is responsible for the laptops.  I need to get at least one person from each LUG trained on their operation and maintenance (upgrading the OS for example).  We need to discuss our goals with the project and lay out a plan for reaching it and measuring it along the way.

In other news:

Warren Sanders, Andrew Niemantsverdriet (both from the BillingsLUG) and I returned from the Utah Open Source Conference on Saturday.  I wrote up a review on the website (https://www.montanalinux.org/review-utosc2009.html). I brought back a bit of SWAG with me to share with the LUG so be at the Oct. meeting if you want some.
