I think Privacy Badger or an ad blocker in my browser was bocking Disqus but I had to whitelist it or the vast majority of comments on websites would not show up.

Another point, at least for me (not having Facebook / Twitter accounts), is that in order to leave a comment on many sites, Disqus was one of my only options so I begrudgingly signed up for a Disqus account... and I use it occasionally.
