Trying that fails with this error:

'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

Trying this:

mysqladmin --user=mysql password 'my_mysql_password'

I get this error:

'Access denied; you need the SUPER privilege for this operation'

Trying this:

mysqladmin --user=mysql

I get a big long help screen. Starts with this:

mysqladmin Ver 8.41 Distrib 5.0.67, for debian-linux-gnu on i486
Copyright (C) 2000-2006 MySQL AB

Administration program for the mysqld daemon.
Usage: mysqladmin [OPTIONS] command command....
-c, --count=# Number of iterations to make. This works with -i
                      (--sleep) only.
