* Expected Behavior: *

Properly working pi-hole running on a Raspberry Pi (model B?) connected via
Asus RT-AC56R Router for power and via RJ45 for network connectivity.
Router is the DHCP server and Pi-hole is only the DNS component.

*Actual Behavior:*

As soon as I save the Router configuration with the Pi as the primary and
secondary DNS address I lose all access to the outside world.

*Background:*

Using “Imager” on Ubuntu 20.04, I installed Raspberry OS Lite on the
Raspberry Pi. I then powered it up and ran the basic configuration utility.
I did have a little issue with the location but I believe I got that
figured out. I also changed the Host name using the Pi configuration
utility/script. I then installed Pi-hole and walked through the wizard. I
did not want to use the originally assigned DHCP address and wanted to use
another address that I had previously been using with a different computer
that I had powered off. I entered the new IP Address and entered the
Gateway address. After the script finished the install the Pi rebooted and
came back online with the original DHCP address. I have been unable to
figure out why the static IP will not work. If I check the “dhcpcd.conf”
file I can see the correct network configuration listed and not ignored
out. I finally reserved the static address by MAC address in the router and
that is the only way I was able to get the Pi to respond with the desired
address that is correctly configured in “dhcpcd.conf”. Thinking I was good
to go now, I changed the web interface password and then configured the
router to point to the Pi as the DNS server. As soon as the Asus Router
loaded the new settings I lost all external network access. In the end I
had to reconfigure my router to use another DNS source.

I previously had an Intel NUC running as a Pi-hole server but had listed a
secondary DNS server other than the NUC as a backup. Now I am questioning
if I have ever had a functioning Pi-hole server. So with that said, I see
this as possible being more than one issue and possibly being a Router
issue, a Pi/Pi-hole issue, or a “me” issue.

Any suggestions appreciated.
