Yeah, they've been saying they plan to remove Tab Groups for a few years now.  I'll definitely miss it... and hope it doesn't get removed.  I don't know why it would continuously need lots of maintenance.  I think more users would use it if they were aware of it.  It isn't own by default (and so far as I know, never has been) so expecting users to hunt it down in the settings to turn it on... means of course it is only used by a small number of users.  If it was on by default and they explained what's good about it, I think it would have a much larger pool of users.

So far as Pocket and Chat goes... I believe Pocket is a source of revenue because it is a commercial service (I think, I've not used it)... and Chat is tied into their fairly new account system which they continue to value-add to.  Those two features are also very important for the mobile versions whereas tab groups, not so much.
